NHF calls for more affordable housing

There is still a real need for more social housing, according to
the National Housing Federation (NHF).
Spokesperson Joe Dumont acknowledged that property prices have
fallen recently, but said they grew at such a rapid rate over the
past decade that most homes are still out of reach for people on
low or middle incomes.
He added that there are currently 1.6 million families on council
waiting lists for affordable housing and thousands of people in
unsuitable accommodation.
"We have a shortage of affordable housing for sale; we have a
desperate shortage of affordable housing for social rent so it is
absolutely vital that we build as many affordable homes as we
possibly can," Mr Dumont stated.
The Department for Communities and Local Government recently
announced a number of measures designed to encourage developers to
build more affordable homes, including a national clearing house
for unsold stock.
